Cathedral of Saint Mary

Cathedral of Saint Mary

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, also known as the Primate Cathedral of Toledo, is the current headquarters of the Archdiocese of Toledo.

It’s a building of Gothic architecture considered by some as the magna opera of all things Gothic in Spain.

Work to build the Holy Cathedral Church began in 1227 over the foundation of the 6th century Visigoth Cathedral once also used as a mosque.

It is built of white stone from Olihuelas and is comprised of spectacular chapels such as the main chapel, a splendid chapterhouse, extraordinary stained glass windows, a sacristy that houses work by very important painters and a bell tower offering incredible views of the cathedral.

The tower may be visited and you can go all the way to the top to enjoy an awesome panoramic view ninety metres high in the sky.
