Church of Santo Tomé

Church of Santo Tomé

Whenever someone speaks of Santo Tomé, they never forget to mention El Greco and his masterpiece: “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz”, a masterpiece by El Greco and of universal painting.

It is, for many, the most influential painting in universal history. It’s one of the most heavily-visited tourist spots in Spain and the beauty will definitely leave a mark on you.

Art and painting enthusiasts consider Santo Tomé to be a place where they can recreate the great work by the Crete native.

The church was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century on the orders of the Count of Orgaz who added the current Christian bell tower to the old Muslim minaret. Santo Tomé also gives visitors the opportunity to discover one of the richest churches in the city as far as history and art.

Mr Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, the royal councillor of Castile and lord of the villa of Orgaz, stood out due to his generous charitable work including his contributions to the reconstruction of parish churches like this one.
